I don’t know what to make of it all. It’s all happening so fast. In a new york minute indeed. For an interesting hello into the US, and into New York City proper, some unlicensed cab driver tried to scam me as soon as I got off the plane. I was booked at a hotel for a week, and during that time, I had to find a place to live. More scams: one guy tried to charge me a month’s rent finder’s fee, apparently just for showing me the apartment. Then, there was a woman who had curtained off a bed in a large studio apartment (her bed was another curtained off area), and was charging $1700 a month for it. Honestly though, I almost took it, I was getting so desperate. But as things would have it, it all worked out: I am writing to you from a very nice space, in a great neighborhood with a Barnes & Noble and Starbucks a block away, three pizza places, Chinese and Japanese restaurants, and a great hot dog place — all in a three block radius. I love it here.
Work was the worst part of it, so far. Firstly, it’s for a financial organization, so some websites are off limits, like Yahoo! mail (though the main page works). And there is no one playing any kind of music anywhere, not even wearing headphones. Then, when I thought I was doing okay, my boss talked ill of this little piece of code I wrote for him to my coworkers in front of me. And he kept joking to me about the work he had given me, “Done yet?” So I went at my work full force, you could call it, getting a much bigger piece of code done before, apparently, he expected me to be done. I was getting upset for no reason, it would appear, and today, he told me, “Good job.” And that literally got me high to hear it. I mean, I could feel the endorphins being released because of those magic words. I’m just amazed at how well things work out — if you give it a little while, mind you. Every little setback has been the precursor to great things. Ah, life.
